Are the Mariners set?
The Mariners sign Jorge Polanco and seemingly have no desire to fill any other holes. Have we seen the last impact signings of the offseason?
Ahh, the words heard around the Mariners world.
Jerry Dipoto has once again outdone himself by standing in front of a microphone. After the last few years, you would think that the Mariners FO or even ownership group would lay a bit lower, maybe try and stay within a strict set of lines for press conferences, but here we are, in 2025, with another batch of quotes to scrutinize.
Dipoto held a press conference via Zoom on Monday 2/3 which means it was most likely the safest place you could ever handle a press conference with only invited members of the media and friendly faces all around. Jerry took advantage and gave the ol’ ho hum speech and let everyone know he has all of the right guys right here, and the additions of Polanco and Arozarena (who were on the team in 2024 btw) give them exactly what they need for the upcoming season.
Now, behind my eyes rolling all of the way in the back of my head, there is a kernel of truth behind this. A full year of Victor Robles, Randy Arozarena, and a healthy Jorge Polanco could very well be the boost they need to get to the playoffs. I don’t think any Mariners fans really deny that. The long standing feud between the fans and the front office/ownership group goes much deeper.
Year after year the Mariners have been in their Championship window, on the “cusp” and even towards their self proclaimed “crest” as famously said by Jerry Dipoto. Yet, here we are with the draft, develop, and trade method that gets the team ever so close, just to fall short of not just a World Series, but the playoffs altogether.
The front office and ownership group in Seattle would like you to think that they tried, they attempted to sign those big name free agents like Christian Walker, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman etc. but the reality is, we have seen this same story every offseason since 2021. Before that, being told that we had to wait for the prospects to grow up. Here we are, with a superstar in CF, top three rotation, a Platinum Glover behind the dish, and what do they do to put them in a position to win? Sign Jorge Polanco and Donovan Solano.
Nice depth pieces, sure. When you are looking at the likes of the Dodgers signing Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and former Mariner Teoascar Hernandez.. All through, you guessed it, Free agency.
This is the way, this is what we have to deal with going into 2025 and beyond. As always, we’ll be watching all 162 games and buying in to a team that doesn’t deserve probably half of the love the fan base gives them, but it is what it is. Not showing up to games and not watching baseball altogether is a self inflicted wound I’m not willing to suffer.
Go M’s. Let’s have a 2025 like none other.
Be on the lookout for some dates for watch parties in Spokane, Washington. We are going to start up the podcast here in the next few weeks as well.
So hard to compete in a division that actually spends like everyone does in the West expect for us and the A's.
